School History
Gentiana Primary School is situated near Lenana school, at Mutego slums, two kilometers from Ngong Road. It's was started by Swiss Sponsors as Primary school and Technical school to support less fortunate boys' and girls but bright students.
The Institute trains electrical skills and computer basics to the students who went primary level at Gentiana School.
Commencing of Technical School
The first group started in the year 2009 with Thirteen students, (eleven boys and two girls) and a tutor. The Technical school educate both boys and girls who come from poor background to enlighten their future with technical skills.
Electrical course was divided into sections that is, Theory and Practical part of it which was to learn for period of 2 years. In first year student were able to learn basics on domestics installations of (220- 240v) they learn t how to installs domestics appliances like switches, sockets and bulbs holders, rectify fault and tressing fault.
At the end of year students sit for the final examinations and it was amazing because out of nine student everyone pass with flying colors. People from community came to enquire more about technical school as well as looking vacancy which was too late.
During second year student acquired more skills on machine operations and industrious installations that range from 415v. They were skilled on how to install machine like motors, tressing fault and repairing of kitchen appliances like kettles, iron boxes, and water heaters. Student were always determined because even in the second year, everybody pass and this made the management very proud.
Apart from electrical, students were taught other lessons like communications skills, Civics Educations, Technical drawing and basics on computer hardware.
Challenges
In the first place the institution underwent through some challenges because student were not sure of themselves and some dropped out. In the first days students use to learn for the whole day without taking lunch or tea. The class had Form Four leavers and class Eight. The class Eight drop out were the most big number in class and this brought vital problem because some could not comply with teaching methods.
The tutor had hard time to deal with such student because he could teach for the whole day and when tomorrow comes every body is totally blank which made him keep on repeating. Most of the ladies came and left the technical school as they wanted to learn computer only. Learning electrical skills was challenging
Benefits
The Technical School brought great benefits because teaching method was in detailed, teaching method couldn't find in any place. Students with help from teacher installed technical school with high voltage current that is, Three Phase Four wire and this contribute a lot when doing practicals assignment.
On the other hand, students move to rural areas to prove there skills which brought great achievements that motivate student of second group to join the institution. The Instructor took student to field trips to acquire more skills which later came and share the knowledge with rest.
Impacts
Student trained how to rely on themselves doing work using hands and
this has brought great impact to student as now they has started
applying skills by doing some house installations in their
respective areas. Computer skills also contributed greatly because
they are now knowledgeable, and can use different computer
applications, finding some more information concerning electrical
work through Internet and do some computer hardware repairs.
The name of Technical School have become known locally as result of
good performance from student and thus produce quality services.
People are coming all over the area to join institution since the
Education is of high quality.
Development
Since institution started in the year 2009 student has been doing
great job as well us performance too. Like in the first group all
did grade test (2 and 3) and pass with flying colors though with
hardships they went through. The school is now provided with enough
working materials and Student can now do practical tasks without
sharing materials.
The number of student has increased from ten (10 ) of the first
group to sixteen (16) of current. The number of ladies increased
from two to three which shows girl child can also do electrical work.
